JEFF BARG

Director

Jeff Barg is an award-winning writer, editor and urbanist from Philadelphia. He brings expertise in policy, government, city planning, arts and culture to the Ceisler Media team.

As a cultural and urban planner, Jeff works to improve cities. He’s a skilled connector, advocate and partnership-maker who strives to advance equity by bringing together people, organizations and communities.

At Ceisler Media, he works with clients on strategy, communications, media, issue advocacy and outreach in order to maximize positive impact on Philadelphia’s neighborhoods. He brings a focus on antiracism, as well as experience in leading organizational shifts toward a more inclusive culture.

Jeff has spent his career with one foot in planning, the other in journalism. For nearly a decade he led urban planning, policy and government affairs for the nonprofit Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, where he managed the organization’s city, state and federal government relations. He also developed, maintained and promoted the organizational policy agenda, while forming strategic partnerships with government agencies, nonprofits and nongovernmental organizations. Prior to becoming an urban planner, Jeff was a longtime writer and editor for Philadelphia Weekly. He has received awards from the American Planning Association, the Society of Professional Journalists, the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association and the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies.

He currently writes the Angry Grammarian column for the Philadelphia Inquirer. His volunteer work includes many years of service with Rock to the Future, a music education nonprofit based in Kensington, and the South Philly theater company Raw Street Productions, where he serves on the board of directors.

Jeff has a master’s degree in city and regional planning and a bachelor’s in American history and urban studies, both from the University of Pennsylvania. He lives in South Philadelphia with his wife, their son and the world’s pranciest pup.
